Yesterday was a big day for me. I published my very first blog. My own domain name, my own look, everything! It is exciting to venture into blogging, yet it can be a bit overwhelming to get started as a newbie. I figured that this would be a great first topic for my “Tuesday Tips” section. 5 Tips for Starting Your Very First Blog 1. Figure out your purpose. This may be clear from the beginning, or it could take some time to work out exactly what it is you want to talk about and why. Since your blog is a reflection of who you are it is important that you are clear on your purpose. Take some time, reflect and get feedback from friends and family. This process will help you clarify your ideas and move forward. 2. Start writing and keep writing. You should spend a few months writing blog posts before you actually go live with your blog. Blogging takes time and dedication, getting into the habit of writing is important. You will also find your purpose and direction become clearer once you start writing. Also keep a list of topics as they pop in your head. You will appreciate having this “backup” content once you get started, it will help take the pressure off. 3. Don’t spend a lot of time and money on setting up a blog. It is easy to get overwhelmed with all the choices out there when setting up a blog. This can serve as a big roadblock for getting started. My advice is set up a free or inexpensive WordPress Theme. You can always change the Theme once you figure out what you want. 4. Spend some time growing your Twitter, Facebook and other social media networks. You want to have good relationships in place to help promote your blog. This network will also help you generate topic ideas and maybe even content. Remember that listening to others and really connecting is the key to these relationships. 5. Set a date to make your blog live then jump in and have fun! The process for starting a blog can be overwhelming. But once it is live there is a huge sense of relief and success. It is really exciting to see your stuff published and have people take interest. It is easy to drag your feet on going live, but my advice is to make it happen sooner than later.
