How to Get Positive Reviews: A Critical Step in Online Reputation Management for Local Businesses

How to get positive reviews for local businesses

Getting positive reviews is one of the most critical components of online reputation management. I’ve seen firsthand how a negative review can darken a small business’s reputation and tank local search rankings. For businesses with only a handful of reviews, one bad experience shared online can mean an immediate negative perception for potential customers.

If your business lacks positive reviews (or any reviews, for that matter), you’re not alone. Many businesses struggle to see positive reviews surface online, not because they don’t deserve them or their customers are unsatisfied but simply because they don’t know how to ask. They assume happy customers will naturally leave a review, but the reality is that most people don’t think about it unless prompted. That’s why it’s imperative to have a proactive strategy for encouraging positive reviews. So today, I’m sharing my tried and true strategies for channeling happy, satisfied customer experiences into glowing online reviews for all to see.

Why Asking for Positive Reviews Is Worth It

  1. They Balance Out Negative Reviews: The more positive reviews you have online, the more they will drown out the occasional complaint. The important part is that the positive outnumbers the negative–that way, the one person venting all their frustrations will look like a fluke next to the reviews singing your praises. Additionally, the more reviews you have, the more credible and trustworthy you’ll appear to potential customers.
  2. They Boost Your SEO Rankings: Reviews greatly improve your local search rankings. If you’re trying to improve your image on platforms like Google My Business, Trip Advisor, Yelp, and others, then recent, genuine, and positive reviews will get you prioritized. Not only will you look good when people come across your business, but they will help your business get seen more.
  3. They Build Customer Trust: Prospective customers feel more confident choosing your business over a competitor when they see a balance of positive feedback. Positive reviews act as social proof, showing others that your business delivers excellent experiences.

Proven Strategies to Get Positive Reviews

I’ve been doing this for a long time, and here’s what has worked for my clients over the years:

1. Ask at the Right Moment

Timing is everything. The best time to ask for a review is immediately after a positive experience. Bring it up while the experience is fresh and the feelings are good! For example:

  • If you’re a restaurant owner, ask diners for a review when they compliment their meal.
  • For service businesses, request a review after completing a job and confirming the client’s satisfaction.
  • If you ship products online, follow up after the product has been received or include a note in the packaging.

By asking when the positive experience is still fresh in their minds, you’re more likely to receive glowing feedback.

2. Make It Easy

Unfortunately, people are less motivated to leave positive reviews than negative, and no one wants to jump through a bunch of hoops. You want to make the process as simple and straightforward as possible. To streamline your request, try:

  • Sending follow-up emails or texts with a direct link to your Google My Business or Yelp profile.
  • Displaying in-store QR codes that customers can scan to leave a review.
  • Including review links on your website and in your email signature.

The more you can simplify the process and remove obstacles, the more accessible the review process will be for your customers.

3. Be Transparent in Your Request

Let your customers know why their reviews matter. For example, you can say, “Your feedback helps us grow and allows other customers to find us.” This not only encourages participation but also builds goodwill.

4. Leverage Social Media

Social media is a great way to both share and encourage positive reviews. Quote positive reviews in your posts and share images celebrating positive customer feedback. That way, you can use that as a segue for inviting others to share their experiences, too. For example, you could share a testimonial and include a caption like:

“We love hearing when our customers have a positive experience! If you’re satisfied with your service, we’d love it if you left us a review on Google!”

This reminder can motivate your followers to leave reviews and amplify their positive experiences.

5. Reward Feedback, Not Reviews

Be careful not to violate platform policies when asking for reviews. You can’t technically pay or offer rewards to motivate people to leave positive reviews, but you can thank customers when they provide feedback in other ways. For example, you can offer them discounts or loyalty points for completing surveys or engaging with your business, and these actions can naturally lead to reviews on their own.

6. Train Your Team on How to Ask for Reviews

Your staff plays a crucial role in earning reviews, and you will need everyone on board. Train employees to identify happy customers and politely ask them for a review. A well-timed personal request can make all the difference. You can make this easier on your team by providing them with a pre-written language or script to work from, then have them practice until they become comfortable with the request.

Need Help with Your Review Strategy?

Positive reviews are more than a nice-to-have; they’re a lifeline for local businesses working to earn trust and stand out. I know reviews can be awkward to ask for, but remember that most people like to be helpful if the request is not unreasonable and they understand your motivations for asking. By implementing these strategies, you’ll create a steady stream of glowing feedback that protects your reputation, improves your rankings, and grows your business.
