Social Media Contests: Benefits and Tips

Nicole Harrison · July 5, 2016 ·

If you sSocial Media Contest pend time on Facebook, Twitter or other social media platforms you may have probably seen contests and tried your luck at one or two. There is something intriguing about entering your name in a drawing, answering a question or liking something if you have the potential to get something out of it! But what benefits do social media contests really bring, especially to brands and businesses? If and when a social media contest is well-executed, it can bring about several great benefits:

  • Increase following When your social media contest has low barriers of entry, people are likely to enter. Someone may not have heard about your business or brand until someone shared the contest they just participated in on their social media page. A contest compels your followers to share details about something they just did with their online community. Have your community do some of your marketing for you by giving them something to promote and talk about.
  • Audience engagement Hosting a trivia contest like the one SocialNicole built for Lifesprk for #NursesWeek can create a fun way for people to engage with your brand in a fun, but relevant manner. The audience got excited about the trivia contest and Lifesprk was able to promote their own workforce development needs aka they are growing and looking to hire more nurses and nurse assistants too.
  • Provide data A social media contest can provide you with a lot of data which is great. But you need a clear sense of the data you want your contest to provide you. While a contest will provide you with the number of people who are engaging with, you can monitor likes, comments, shares and new followers there is other data you may also be able to attain. Depending on what platform you use for your contest, such as email addresses, demographic information, location etc. Planning questions carefully and thinking through what kind of data you want to attain can help maximize your investment in building and running a contest.
  • Raise awareness Whether or not someone is familiar with your business or your brand, a social media contest presents you with the platform to raise awareness. Encourage your followers to share the contest with their following. Offer an incentive, and they are likely to get the word out there. Brand awareness can be incredibly important to building a brand and increasing sales. While many c-suite leaders focus on the immediate sales, contests are often about building brands and bringing people into your circle. Don’t underestimate the importance of building awareness and the power of contests to do this.

Knowing the benefits a social media contest can have for our business or brand is great, but it can still seem like more work than necessary. Here are a few tips to help break it down.

Tips for your social media contest:

  • Consider hiring an expert in setting up social media contests to help guide your process. While hiring an experienced social media agency can add to the total cost of the contest, you will save time and also maximize your results. Make sure you ask any agency for examples of the contests they have created and the approximate cost to create that contest as part of your selection process.
  • Set goals: Determine what you want the outcome of your contest to be. Do you want to just engage with your current audience, increase your number of followers or gather feedback? Having a clear definition of your goals will allow you to determine whether or not your contest has been effective.
  • Pick a platform: Decide what platform you want to utilize for your contest or if you want to enlist the help of a third party app.
  • Pick a prize: Choose a benefit that is reflective of the amount of effort that needs to be put forth in order to enter the contest.
  • Keep it simple: The easier it is for people the enter, the more likely they are to participate.
  • Promote: Use social media ads to promote your contest. Encourage your participants to share the contest. Make it social and interactive.
  • Follow up: When your contest is complete, follow up with those who participated. Thank them and announce the winner.

Hosting a social media contest can seem like a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be. Know your goals and have a plan and the rest will follow. If you have any great tips for hosting a social media contest, or any questions about how to start, let me know in the comments!

The Real Value of Facebook Contests

Nicole Harrison · May 21, 2014 ·

Real Value of Facebook Contests Recently we were asked on our Facebook page what the value of Facebook contests was. That’s a great question! Oftentimes people are a bit weary of asking for page Likes or post interaction for a contest because it feels contrived with an incentive tied to it. Much like paid promotion, doing this may not seem genuine. However, with Facebook continuing to reduce the amount of page content making it into the newsfeed of users it has be come even more important to ask for engagement. Contests can be a great way to increase brand interaction and awareness!

Three reasons to host a Facebook contest:

1. Generate New Leads

Direct fans to a signup page on your website. This way, fans will not only go to your website to enter, but you will also get their email address and any other requested information. This is a great way to start increasing leads and boost brand awareness even after the contest ends. People always ask how do I convert fans to customers? The answer is simple. Get them on your email list. Social is the place to connect, engage and build trust and relationships. Selling happens most effectively once you move your fans to your email list. Using contests to help move fans to your email list can be a very effective.

2. Direct People to Your Blog or Website

Host a contest that requires fans to submit or click something on your website. It will help increase traffic and draw non-participants to your website as well. For example, Sephora drove traffic to their website by encouraging users to visit and upload personal photos to The Beauty Board. This strategy can easily be modified for contests!

3. Boost Social Media Engagement

While community interaction is the foundation of social media marketing, boosting fan engagement has become even more important with Facebook’s newest algorithm changes. Contests that require interaction on your Facebook page can be very effective to increase overall engagement and therefore ongoing organic reach. It also helps spread your message and page organically to your fans Facebook friends. Contests that require voting or commenting or submitting ideas can be very effective. There are also many ways to run photo contests, video contests, quizzes and other types of contests that focus on engagement as part of the process of picking a winner. And let’s not forget simple sweepstakes where people like the page to enter. You get the idea!

Three types of Facebook contests to consider:

1. Content Contest

If your web traffic could use a lift, consider a content-centered contest. Let’s say you want to host a guest-posting contest. Fans would submit their writing to be entered in the contest for a chance to be featured on your blog. This is a great community builder because it gets your fans thinking, interacting, and the final product is something you can post! Another option is to ask fans to submit a photo or video to be entered in the contest.

2. Vote-Driven Contests

There are two steps to this type of contest. First, fans have to submit an entry, such as a photo or a comment. Next, fans vote on their favorite post(s), and this is how the winner is chosen. Content contests are often driven by votes, which removes the work of selecting a winner.

3. Comment/Like to Win

This is an easy way to increase engagement if your numbers are low or if you’re looking to promote something specific. Fans can Like or Comment on a post to be entered into this type of contest. For this type of contest, you can use an app or a random number generator to select the winner.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that hosting a contest will permanently increase your page likes and boost engagement long-term. While contests can help both of these things significantly, they are only temporary and you need a solid strategy to keep your fans engaged!

The Most Successful Social Media Contests

Nicole Harrison · December 20, 2012 ·

pointMarketing your business can get competitive. Finding ways to keep content fresh and interactions interesting can be a daunting task. Social media contests are a great way to engage and interest users – plus, they’re fun! There are lots of options for types of contests to run on your social media outlets, but we’ve found that there are a few that are particularly effective. Keep reading to find out why these top contests are great catalysts for helping your business grow.

1. The Challenge Contest A challenge contest is a Facebook contest where users enter by performing tasks in order to gain points for the contest. Every point that a user gains is considered an entry, and the more entries one has, the better their chance of winning. The challenge contest is an easy one to enter – which is what makes it so successful. In the beginning, users simply enter in their name and email and they already have a chance to win. Once they’ve entered, users continue to have chances to gain points through challenges that you present. This system allows entrants to spend as much or as little time and energy working through your challenges, which, in turn, gets more people to enter because it’s so easy. This contest also encourages users to interact with your business. If you so choose, you can send participants on virtual missions that involve scouring your website, social media pages or online store in order to learn information that will give them points towards your challenge contest. This contest will increase brand awareness while building a sense of community and familiarity around your brand. Customers have a chance to interact and share their interests with your brand, further identifying your loyal fans and maybe attracting new ones. The challenge contest traditionally gains one of the highest entry levels for Facebook contests and is a great opportunity to increase your fan base and page traffic. Just remember, you must always run your Facebook contests through a third-party app. (Confused about what that means? Check out our How to Run a Facebook Contest Without Getting Shutdown post) 2. Sweepstakes Sweepstakes is a simple contest that allows you to give away prizes based on a random draw. The great thing about Sweepstakes contests is that you can run them on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, which gives you diverse options. The recurring theme here is simplicity. Sweepstakes are easy for users to enter, so you’ll naturally get more entrants. Part of this contest’s successful nature is your ability to sneakily imbed ways to build brand awareness. Consider asking entrants to complete a brief survey before entering the sweeps or require entrants to watch a brief movie before entering. This gives an easy way to gather customer information and build brand awareness without overwhelming your entrants. Screen shot 2012-12-14 at 10.12.23 AM Sweepstakes are also a great way to build your email or mailing list. Users must provide their contact information upon entry, and this allows you to reach your new and existing customers. Again, sweepstakes will also increase your Facebook fan base and increase traffic on your Facebook page, Twitter feed or Pinterest boards, which is always something to smile about. Again, remember that any contest or sweepstakes must provide participants with terms and conditions of entry. On Twitter, the easiest way to do this is to include a short link to your contest rules in your tweet. You could also host a landing page with the contest details and direct entrants to that page instead of having discussions through your Twitter stream.

3. Photo Contest  Though photo contests are a more complicated and labor intensive contest, they offer great benefits for your business. The photo contest is another that can be done on multiple outlets, mainly Facebook and Pinterest. In this contest, you ask users to enter photos that fit a certain criteria (make sure this criteria is relatable to your business). Photo contests are successful because, if promoted correctly, you can get incredible user participation. This contest will give you the chance to see who’s serious about interacting with your business and why. This contest builds powerful brand awareness and allows you to openly interact with customers. Photo contests give you ideas and insights into users thoughts and feelings about your business, and give you content (photos) for continued use. This contest puts your customers in the driver’s seat. It’s up to them to create content that you judge, and that encourages them to research and understand your brand, further increasing their loyalty and understanding of your business. How to Run a Facebook Contest That Won’t Get Shut Down

Nicole Harrison · November 19, 2012 ·

Though contests and giveaways on Facebook can be fun, they’re a lot more complicated than you may think. The specific rules and regulations of Facebook must be carefully followed or you run the risk of losing your company page all together! Facebook has specific Page Terms pertaining to contests and giveaways to help page owners understand the rules (check out Section E here). At SocialNicole, we’ve had plenty of practice following these rules with our clients! Therefore we understand that they can be difficult to dissect and hard to understand at first.  To help you out, we’ve broken down the key restrictions so you can learn how to protect your page and run your contest the right way. You need to use a third-party app to administer your contest Though you don’t need written permission from Facebook or an account representative at Facebook in order to run your contest, you still must administer all Facebook contests through a third-party app on the Facebook platform. This is a big one. If you intend to run a promotion or contest on Facebook, you have to run it on a Canvas Page or a Page App. You cannot run the promotion on your timeline or profile page. If you decide to ignore this restriction, you run the risk being shut down by Facebook. Wildfire, Votigo and NorthSocial are all viable app options to run your contest through. You can’t validate an entry through ‘liking’ or tagging You’re allowed to restrict your promotion only to entrants who have already ‘liked’ your page as long as you’ve used a third-party app to administer your contest. However, you cannot accept ‘liking’ or tagging as a form of entrance into the contest. The act of ‘liking’ your page is not an acceptable form of entry, as it excludes those who already ‘like’ your page. Put simply, you’re not allowed to use Facebook features and functionality (for example, the ‘like’ button) as a way to let entrants vote. Clearly and visibly set out your contest terms Contests and promotions on Facebook must have clear terms and conditions that are visible directly on the Canvas Page. Facebook requires that you include a complete release of Facebook by each who enters, acknowledgment that the contest is not affiliated with or sponsored by Facebook, as well as a disclosure statement that the entrant is providing information to someone besides Facebook. Make sure you check with the laws and regulations your state may have associated to contests and sweepstakes as well. Don’t select a fan at random Because you’re not allowed to use Facebook to “collect entires,” you’re not allowed to choose a fan winner at random. You must select a winner from the people who have entered your contest through a third party application as outlined above. Don’t make this simple mistake! Informing your winner If you’ve made it to the point of selecting a contest winner while successfully following all the restrictions, congratulations! But remember, you’re not allowed to notify your winner through Facebook. Shoot them an email, give them a call, even tweet at them – just don’t contact your winner through Facebook. Although setting up a contest is not simple, it can be a worthwhile endeavor. If you are interested in running a contest on Facebook, SocialNicole offers professional advice. Our expert team is eager to help you with every detail: brainstorming contest ideas, creating artwork, even finding a 3rd party application! So what are you waiting for?
